Today is the birthday of two of the 167 American servicemen
who died in Vietnam on a Fourth of July.
Marine Corporal David Willis Terrell, born Jan. 18, 1944,
was killed in action by fragmentation wounds on the Fourth of July, 1966. He
was among nine Marines and one Navy Corpsman who were killed in an ambush at My
Loc. Corporal Terrell was 22 and unmarried. He is buried at Centuries Memorial
Park in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Navy Electricians Mate Manolo Briones Agnes, 23, was born
this date in 1948 and was from San Pablo City in the Philippines. He died in an
accident on July 4, 1971 when struck by a South Vietnamese Navy ambulance near
the Vietnamese Navy Dispensary at Cat Lo. He is one of 27 men in the American
armed forces killed in Vietnam whose Home of Record is the Philippines. Many
more men of Filipino descent who lived in the United States served in the war.
